Another lockdown

We just heard tonight that Auckland will enter another Level 3 lockdown from 6am tomorrow.  We are still at the beach house so will just stay on here.  This time it all feels a lot scarier because the person affected has been out in the community while infectious and it also involved many young people who have not been self isolating when they should have been.  Time will tell but I think we are better off staying where we are.

We finished off most of the work at Stu's fathers house and he is so pleased.  He is moving tomorrow for good and while it's bittersweet that he's leaving his old home, he is excited about the move.  Today Stu and I went all over Whitianga looking for suitable cushions for his lounge suite which was looking very bland with no colour on it.  My goodness some places were expensive and wanted $120 for one cushion!  We ended up at The Warehouse and saw some good possibilities so picked up his Dad and took him to make the final decision -- he chose a rusty red colour and cream and they look lovely in his lounge and really add some colour.  We also got two tropical patterned cushions for the outdoor area too.

On another note my daughter is having a dreadful time with Fletcher.  He threw a fit at not being allowed to go away with his girlfriend's family this weekend after giving my daughter zero notice (she had other plans had already been made).  Then when lockdown was announced he said that his girlfriend's family would be picking him up to go and stay with them!  He said he didn't want to stay with his own family.  I have no idea what will happen but my daughter is obviously very upset with the way he is treating her.  It's all very upsetting.

So we get to stay here which is good and also will be able to help Stu's Dad a bit more because Coromandel is only in lockdown level 2 which allows us to see him.

The new cushions -- not the greatest but they will do for now.  That painting on the wall is a family treasure that he has had for over 60 years and was painted by his auntie for his first marriage in the early 60s.  He is so happy to have it on his wall because it was hidden away during his second marriage.

I will get more photos later in the week.

The outside area -- the sides of this area will be covered in soon (just waiting to get it done) so it will be a lovely, comfortable area to enjoy.

  1. So glad you are at the beach house, because you are absolutely right, you may have an explosion of numbers. My daughter’s college has really struggled (for just the reasons you said) and they had the advantage of being able to send kids home to finish the semester (or be expelled). It is shocking how fast it can spread. Do they know what strain this is? Do they have a guess where this one came from/is it related to the last outbreak? So sorry this is happening after you have done so well for such a long time. I did not think it would, I thought your island bubble would hold.

Your FIL’s looks really great. It will be very easy for him to take care of things. Love the painting.

Fletcher. It is tough that is starting so young (what we would call high school?). I have huge sympathy for your daughter. None of mine started dating until college or after, so I never had to deal with high school romance. And it is a bad sign when they are fixated to the point that they do not do other things or care about family, I agree. (Most of the time I had the advantage that my older kids and their friends and love interests wanted to be here. Lots of room, I feed them well.)

    1. Patio - putting in screen walls or something else?

  2. Vickie: On the patio there will be clear plastic type screens on three sides and a type of fabric on the other side (sun shade type fabric). Most of the other homes there have this and it's great.

Fletcher is year 11, High school. We are all quite shocked at the change in him and the fact that his girlfriend suffers from anxiety means she won't go to his place even though she is invited and welcome. A really awkward situation all round as well and hurtful.

The current covid strain is the UK variant, the fast spreading one!

  3. Lynda you are so kind in helping out your FIL, you seem to have helped him out enormously. Just wanted to ask a question about his former home, does he receive any financial gain from the home or does the wicked step daughter get the lot. Hear your pain re: covid, as you’d be aware here in Melbourne we’ve had numerous lockdowns. And Fletcher.....difficult, I have only one child a girl now 36 and didn’t have any issues with her, however I gave her a very long rein and trusted her to the max and it worked out well, I totally understand though that your daughter is probably giving him the same but he wants to push things further. Times have definitely changed from when I was raised, just had to suck it up. Best wishes to your FIL, your help must make him feel so comfortable and happy

  6. Marie: He was left the former home to use the entire money to buy another property and the step daughter was to get half of what was left over and then half of the value of the house he bought when he dies. This would have given him the freedom to buy a much more expensive home and have more money to live on. BUT she contested the will, put a caveat on the sale and would not let him sell as she wanted the property for herself. Long story short, he is nearly 85 and does not have time in his life to fight legal battles so settled on her buying him out at a much lesser cost than the house is valued at now. Bitch. It turns out she is not even going to live in it but rent it out!

As for Fletch, yes times have changed but his Mum has said that before anything more happens she needs to meet the girl! She hasn't even met her or the parents and for him to go staying there that's the least to expect. Oh dear... glad it is her and not me.

  7. Peta: Yes, after he moves in it will certainly get that lived in look :) He's funny though, he doesn't want any clutter or mess as that's what he's had for years.

  8. Your FIL's place looks lovely. I'm glad he can leave the bitch behind and enjoy his twilight years in peace. I'm sure her mother would have been appalled but what can you do.

Teenage boys - I remember those days well! Those damn hormones.

One problem solved and others appear. Darn. Lucky you have the beach house. Isolate and be safe!

  11. How is lockdown/numbers going?

Is NZ vaccinating at this point?

  12. @ Vickie: It's looking pretty good, just waiting on further community cases numbers which won't show up yet. Yes, we are vaccinating but only workers dealing with the border and health workers etc at present. No community vaccination yet but it's important that the people dealing day to day with the known cases (quarantine etc) get vaccinated first.

  13. Ugh teenage boys!!! Generally moody, grunty hormonal monsters. That whole first love thing is pretty intense as well. I wonder if she has any younger siblings? Maybe he thinks a holiday with her family will be so much better because his little brothers won't be there to annoy him (even though he loves them to bits). I would want to at least talk to the parents first 1) to make sure they are actually going to be there and this is not an elaborate ruse to go to a party and 2) to try & ascertain if they are nuts or have no rules.
